Lung Cancer In Non-Smoking Women
The problem with lung cancer is that often it is not diagnosed until it has metastasized to some other organ in the body.
Some facts about lung cancer in women:
• Lung cancer kills more women than breast, uterine and ovarian cancers combined
• One in 17 women with develop lung cancer in her lifetime
• There is a 60% increase among women since 1990
• 80% of all nonsmokers diagnosed with lung cancer are women
• Women are approximately 1.5 times more likely to develop lung cancer than men
While tobacco use is still the leading cause of lung cancer, over 60% of newly diagnosed patients are former or
never smokers. Research funding for lung cancer lags way behind breast, prostate and colorectal cancers. The
survival rates reflect this. From 1974-2001 the five year survival rate for lung cancer increased by 2% - from
12% to 15%. Prostate cancer increased by 33% - from 67% to 100% and breast cancer increased by 13% - from
75% to 88%. (Cancer Facts and Figures 2006, American Cancer Society)
Lung cancer patients should not be stigmatized just because one of the many causes happens to be tobacco.
There is no cure for lung cancer and there is very little funding to find a cure. More should and can be done.
Uniting Against Lung Cancer is making progress in funding for lung cancer research but it’s been an uphill battle. Go to their website, www.unitingagainstlungcancer.org for more information. If you can, make small (or large) donation. You can do it in Christine’s name or you can dedicate the donation to someone you know.
The Lungevity Foundation also raises money for lung cancer research. They have compiled a page full of interesting facts about lung cancer. Visit their site. It can be a eye-opener.
Mesothelioma is another deadly lung cancer disease that deserves a lot of attention. The Mesothelioma Center is an up-to-date resource for all mesothelioma issues ranging from diagnosis to mesothelioma treatment options.

| My kids, Katie & Eric, and me at 36 in March 2004, 2 months before I was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer. I had no symptoms, and no idea there was anything wrong with me. |

| My kids & me at 37 in May 2005, 1 year after diagnosis. I had done 8 cycles of Cisplatin & Gemzar, radiation of the spine and lung, a 4 double cycles of Taxotere. Although I didn't know it at this time, my cancer had spread to my tailbone, brain and lymph nodes.... I found that out in June, 2005. |

More about me...
Diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer May 4, 2004, I was in the hospital, unable to move my torso due to a broken back I had received from the effect of an auto collision on my cancer-compromised spine. My doctor told me that the positive thing was that I would have enough time to do my will! (Positive thing, indeed.) My two children were 5 and 7. Radiation restored my ability to move, but I had to wear a full torso brace for a year as I underwent a year of chemo and radiation. Still, my cancer spread (asymptomatically) to the brain, tailbone, and lymph nodes. I began Tarceva May, 2005. After six months on Tarceva, remission! I promised myself, and God, that if I could be healthy enough to do so, I would help others affected by cancer. The 2-part article I wrote for The Naples Daily News (February, 2006) tells my whole story in more detail.

WHAT IS A "PRACTICAL TRUISM?"
I was in the process of putting my “truisms” into a book form so that when my kids are grown they will always know these things I have learned. After my diagnosis, the project came to mean even more to me. As I am a graphic designer at a printing company, I designed and printed them and gave them to friends and family. Many people later asked to buy multiple copies to give to people they knew. The books proved so popular that I printed more. I have used these truisms to help me achieve my goals in the past, and especially now in my battle to beat cancer, just as I used them to be happy, relaxed and comfortable in my own skin when I was perfectly healthy. No matter what your situation is, these things apply, because these things are true.
