Because my prognosis was so poor and my type of cancer is technically "incurable," I decided there was nothing to lose by trying several different things simultaneously in order to have, perhaps, a chance at living long term. My thinking was this: just because something isn't proven to be helpful, doesn't mean that it isn't helpful. It just means that no one has gone to the tremendous expense and effort of proving that it is. And after all, while everyone "knows" that good nutrition is important for health, who would actually go to the huge expense required to put on clinical trials and prove, to the satisfaction of the FDA, that something works, when there's nothing exclusive that can be sold at the end of the study to recoup the investment. So that's why things like nutrition, or organic food, or herbal supplements will never be proven to be helpful in the treatment or cure of cancer. But it certainly stands to reason that a healthier body is just stronger in general, and is therefore more able to fight any disease, including cancer. This is especially logical when we consider the fact that oncologists become very concerned if a patient drops a great deal of weight, either due to the cancer, or due to the treatment of it. That's because these people, statistically, tend to do worse in terms of longevity than people who don't lose a great deal of weight. (Note, as always, that YOU ARE NOT A STATISTIC. This is in general, but not always so.) And since cancer itself is highly metabolically active and wastes some of the fuel a person ingests, and since the illness, or the treatment of it, can cause a reduced appetite, it makes sense that every effort be made to give your body the best quality food possible. |

Organic Foods Since my cancer was such a huge surprise to me, I thought maybe I was sensitive to pesticides on fruits or the antibiotics and hormones that are given to chickens to make them immune to certain disease and mature much faster than they naturally would. So I also switched over to organic and all natural food. Initially, I expected this to be painful - like I would have to be eating clumps of grass and handfuls of tree bark. But it turns out, you can get anything organic, and the food is absolutely delicious. I had no idea that processed food is so lackluster and mushy! The organic fruits are zestier, the breads are more flavorful, the meats are delicious. It's absolutely wonderful! I could never go back now. The food is more expensive, but it's do-able and it's worth it. Also, I wasn't much of a cook previously, but it turns out, it's not too difficult to slice up some zucchini and onions, maybe some mushrooms and some organic chicken, spice it to taste and put it on whole grain noodles, with some broccoli... everyone loves it! Of course, if you are someone who prefers to follow a recipe, you can make any recipe with organic ingredients and there are tons of cookbooks and recipes for healthy meals out there. The main thing is to eat more vegetable, fruits, whole grains, milk, yogurt, almonds, garlic and cinnamon, and other spices. You don't need to eliminate fats or oils or carbs or any of that stuff; in fact I don't believe that those approaches are healthy at all. You need all the food groups. |

| I do however, believe that someone who has cancer should eliminate table sugar, sucrose or glucose from their diet, as this is cancer's favorite food. This is a documented fact. What do they give you when you get your PET scan? Radioactive glucose. Why? Because the cancer cells just gobble it up, and the fact that it's radioactive makes it visible to the computer. For sweetening things, I use Stevia, which is a natural sweetener that actually has an alkalizing effect on the body. This is good, as cancer cells like an acidic environment. We do not want to give cancer cells anything they like. Honey is also a better choice than sugar as it has enzymes that are beneficial to the body. But beware any food plan that restricts you from foods you really love. Personally, if there is something sugary and delicious that I really, really want, I take a bite, chew it up and enjoy it, then let it slide right into a disposable cup. (This looks for all the world like I'm taking a sip of a beverage.) Cakes and candy bars, food like that, isn't really designed to be bodily fuel; it has no real nutritive value and was created only for the taste anyway. I wouldn't swallow a chocolate bar any more than I would swallow a wad of gum. It's just in my mouth for the taste, not to digest. Additionally, I gave up soda, because they are full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, and neither one seemed like a good thing to me. (I'm not, of course, saying that anyone else has to do things as I have, I am merely detailing what it is I have done, for what that is worth. I'm in no way qualified to advise anyone of anything. But the truth is the truth, and if any of this helps anyone, then I am happier for it.) | ![]() |

Natural Supplements Even with good nutrition, there can and usually are gaps in the vitamins and minerals we're getting every day. The supplements I take are as follows, along with what my nutritionist said they are supposed to do, and links to more in-depth information about them. Whether they were an important part of me being healthy and strong and ultimately going into remission or not... who could say? The bottom line is that along, with Tarceva, these are things I have been taking, and the results have been great, so far. Of course, everyone’s different... so read the links if you’re interested and decide for yourself. |
